Importance of college students voting

As college students I know sometimes we put things such as voting to the side. We would rather watch television, go out with friends, work out in the fitness center, or surf Facebook and twitter. We would do everything but vote. With the upcoming presidential election coming up in fall 2012, it is important that all college students step out of their boundaries and voice their opinions on who they would like to run their country. Every single last vote counts. We have to remember how current President Obama won his presidential campaign in 2008. Obama unanimously won the college students votes all across the country. That played a huge factor in his success. That shows right there that college students voting are just as important as adults with careers voting.
As college students, we have to remember that we are adults too. We are not faced with task just yet of dealing with the real world, but we are on the verge of dealing with it. We also need to start acting like an adult because political decisions will be made that will affect us once we graduate from college.

Do you all remember the voting in Florida in the year 2000? The debacle in Florida that followed the 2000 presidential election is still fresh in many people's minds. If we were to ask college students to go back in time and cast their votes, there might be more urgency for college students to vote.

College students may also don’t vote maybe because their friends don’t vote, or they don’t think it is cool to vote. In reality, it is cool to vote and make a difference in society and our government. We as college students have society know that we are adults too and we have a voice of opinion in this county. Voting is a way that we can voice our opinions. Here is a list of common reasons that college students do not vote; do you fit in this category?

  1. Personally i think that on our campus the majority of students vote. I remember being here during the 08 elections and it was a big deal, there was a lot of emphasis put into voting. Ads all over the dorms and on the quad. People with tables like student democrats or student republicans. When Obama won there was a huge group gathering chanting "Obama" showing their support in his win. There were so many people there and im not saying that every one of them voted but im sure the majority of them did. I think that in a University setting politics are more discussed and facts about elections are more apparent. I know a lot of people out there dont vote because they think they dont have a say and Its because they are ignorant to how an election works is why they think this way.

  2. I absolutely agree that college students need to vote. However, I think they really need to research the candidates and their beliefs before they cast that vote. They can't simply pick a candidate based on their feelings that the candidate it "cool" or "hip." It is my belief that the last election was one by a candidate misleading an uneducated/unsuspecting group of people and we are now paying the consequences. I don't care if you are republican, democrat or an independent. We can longer measure someone's beliefs by their looks or hipness. Don't let others sway your decision and go with what your heart tells you is best for your beliefs.

  3. I do think that it is a good idea for everyone to vote, as American citizens I believe that it is our obligation to vote for the leader of our nation. I know that I did not vote in the last presidential election and I have regretted it ever since. I know it was a while ago and at the time I didn't think it was a big deal but now I regret now voting and wish I would have. I know that I will be voting in this next election and I believe that every college student should as well. It is a chance for us to chose the next leader of this country and i think we should all do our part by voting.

  4. I agree it is important for everyone to vote because in reality whats at stake is our future and not so much the older people because it might not effective them as much, we all need to get out and vote.

  5. This was a very interesting article that deals with a topic that I feel is undervalued. I personally have an extreme view on the matter because I feel that all college students should be required to vote by any means or method necessary. This even includes making it a law that forces them to vote or face prosecution or a fine. I feel this way because voting directly affects all of our futures so I believe that everybody's opinion matters. I have voted in every election since I was able to a couple of years ago. However, I personally have seen that a majority of my friends, which are college aged, have choose not to. This is sad to me because I feel that these people do not understand the extent to how valuable their vote actually is.

  6. I am going to start off by saying that I never voted, however, I do understand the importance of voting. I am not sure about the percentages, but if every single college student voted, I can guarantee that the sole purpose of Presidential candidates would NOT be to impress the top 5% of this nation.

Even at a local level, students do not vote. I heard one time that if one student had 10% of the students enrolled at ISU vote for them to be major of Normal, it could be done. We are the majority of the population here and no one seems to care. If we took charge we could stop the significant increase in off campus housing prices and the increase in book prices; yet all we do is sit back a complain about it (just like I am doing now haha).

Too bad voting isn't as easy as 'liking' someones facebook status, or else our generation would have way more power than we do today.

  7. I agree with this article! I voted at the last presidential election and it was so easy. I think people don't because they think it's hard, but it isn't at all! Also, someone told me that i had no right to complain about it, unless i tried to actually vote. That is so true. Many people are so pessimistic about it, but don't try to make a difference. And for those that don't follow it enough, it doesn't take that much to google or youtube their stance. now i really dont like either nominee this year again, but noone will be perfect, so we must vote for the best possible choice of what's available.

  8. I feel that voting is very important for students on college campuses across the United States, but I feel that informed voting is even more key. In many cases, students were quizzed on radio shows and talk shows in regards to the candidates, but several could not give any information about the platform of a candidate. They would however express support for one specific candidate unconditionally.

  9. I couldn't agree more that all citizens need to vote including college students. Our generation has a lot of innovative and new views. The people we put in office today will be the people that make laws and decisions that will effect us in 10 or 15 years. I think all students need to become more educated with candidates and not just vote for what is popular or their friends are voting for. I hope most colleges highly publicize the presidential candidates and promote voting.

  10. One thing I wish I would have done throughout college is learned about politics. Politics is a subject in which effects every single person. Our daily lives are primary effected by the decisions and agreements made in the political sector. I would love to be active in the election races and have a firm understanding of the election process and type of individuals running for election.
