CHICAGO BLOOD BATH!!!

People are excited because of the warm weather we are having in the month of March, but when the weather gets warm people start acting crazy.  At least 10 people were killed and 39 others were wounded last weekend.
A 6-year-old girl named Aliyah was shot Saturday outside her house in the 3100 block of South Springfield Avenue.  Somebody inside a pickup truck was near her house and started shooting, striking the girl in the abdomen.  The older sister of the 6-year-old was inside the house and heard popping sounds outside, but she thought it was fireworks.  When she ran outside she saw her mom holding her sister and she was not breathing, she was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.  I was glad to hear that on Sunday afternoon, police charged two teens with the little girls murder.  Eighteen-year-old Juan Barraza and a 16-year-old boy, both teens were charged with murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm, police recovered a gun at the scene.  Click on the link to see the video on the news about Aliyah. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-chicago-weekend-shootings-killings-violence-crime,0,5199265.story
Saturday evening, a 24-year-old man was fatally shot standing on the 5900 block of South Fairfield Avenue about 7:04p.m. by somebody inside a vehicle.  He suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he was pronounced dead at 8:17pm.
At 7:50 p.m., police found a 22-year-old man Vincent Fitts, dead with a gunshot wound to the head in the 800 block of East 79th Street.
Another shooting happened Saturday at 10:30 p.m., Jeremy Anthony, 24 was shot in the back while inside a vehicle in the 6300 block of South Ellis Avenue.  The police think he may have driven himself to nearby University of Chicago medical Center, where he was dead upon arrival.
This is insane all of these shooting happened on Saturday alone!  It makes you think twice on leaving your house when the weather is nice.  Its just sad that these people don’t even care that they are killing innocent people and children.
Here are so more fatal shootings that happened Sunday.  Around 1:20 a.m. Bert Lindsey, 36, was fatally shot in the 7500 block of South Wolcott Avenue.  The man was in a backyard at a party when shots were fired into the yard from a passing vehicle.  He was pronounced dead at 2:16 a.m., at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
At 1:55 a.m., one person was shot dead and two others were wounded during a shooting in the 1400 block of West 53rd Street.
There were more serious but non-fatal shootings on Saturday and Sunday.  At 3:22 p.m. Saturday, an 18-year-old man was shot in the arm and a 20-year-old man was shot in the body in the 5200 block of South Albany Avenue, both men were taken in serious-to-critical condition at Mount Sinai Hospital.
About 3:35 p.m., a 17 year-old girl was shot in the leg in the 100 block of East 107th Street, and about the same time, an 18-year-old man was shot in the arm during a drive by attack in the 4600 block of South Michigan Avenue.  He drove himself to Provident Hospital of Cook County and was listed in good condition.
About 7:30 p.m., two men were wounded in a shooting on the Eisenhower Expressway near the 2900 block of West Congress Parkway, one of the men were shot in the head and back, and both of the men are in serious-to-critical condition.
Around 9:05 p.m., a man and two teenage girls were standing on the sidewalk in the 8300 block of South Kedzie Avenue when several males fired shots.  One girl was shot in her left leg, while the other girl was shot in her right leg; they were taken to the hospital in good condition.  The guy was shot in the chest and was taken in serious condition to the Cook County hospital.  This was just some of the non-and fatal shooting but there are a lot more.  It is so messed up that children cannot even play at parks anymore without getting injured or killed.  Communities need to stand up and stop this gang related stuff before it gets much worse.

  1. This article is very interesting because the weather is changing rapidly. People are coming out more as the snow is melting. Kids are coming out more because they sense playtime in the sun is near. Everyone is wearing their spring gear. Since the weather is warming up people lick to engage in outside activities. Families come out and enjoy this weather. Everything is fine until a shooting breaks out an people die or are seriously wounded.
The truth is there is really nothing you can do to stop these shootings because the police work in a reactive environment. The police can only react to police calls from civilians. My best idea for this would to go back to foot patrols but this is less efficient. I truly agree with you Lashanda, it is crazy that citizens can't enjoy this great weather due to stupidity of others.

  2. It is true that crimes are more likely to happen when the weather is nice. They are also more likely to happen at night than during the day. Most criminals commit crime for monetary gain and they are lazy (obviously instead of getting a job they break the law for money) so it makes sense that they are not going to go out in bad weather to make a buck. People definitely need to be more careful during the summer months. It looks like they should not only be careful during the summer but SHOULD NOT visit Chicago!

  3. It's crazy to think that I was in Chicago for the better part of the whole day on Saturday through until about three in the morning on Sunday and had no idea until afterwords that all of this had happened. With Saturday being St. Patty's Day I wonder if alcohol had any role in the high spike of shootings. Aside from the weather being a cause I think you also have to look at theories such as broken windows when considering that these shootings took place on the south side of the city. Areas where the neighborhoods are not in exactly the best condition. In my first blog post I talked about the Detroit Police Department implementing more community policing related policies to decrease similar issues in their city. I think that their approach can be successful, as studies of it have demonstrated, in that by getting Officers back on the streets to focus on what may seem like trivial crimes they will be able to prevent more serious ones in development.

  4. I heard about this on Monday and it is outrageous. I can't believe how many people were killed or wounded in a single weekend. The shootings seem so random and are clearly target-less and innocent people are dying. The weather is getting nicer and nicer and being outside should be a carefree experience and people should be able to enjoy doing things outside. This story makes you think and it's crazy about how some people might have to think twice before going out in the wonderful weather. I can't fathom where these people get the desire to drive around and shoot into random places. In the first story told about the young girl who was murdered those two young boys completely ruined their lives by deciding to shoot their guns in that area. Overall it is just a horrible thing that all these people were killed or injured for no reason.

  5. Well it doesn't help that Majority of people who were out on Saturday were getting hammered drunk for St patty's day. As we all know Alcohol leads to many problems and violence tends to be the biggest one. This is the first time in a while that we have had this warm of weather on St patty's day and that without question leads people to get a little more rowdy then usual. I think that Alcohol had a great influence on the rise of murders this last week. However, that does not explain all the young people getting killed. I think it was just the combination of the great weather and alcohol that lead to this horrible weekend death wise. I was also in Chicago all of Saturday and witnessed a lot of fights and arguments between people. Alcohol turns normal situations or arguments into possible deadly one. I do agree thought it is very messed up that all these people really can never have a sense of safety.

  6. This is a very interesting article. It is so strange how these crazy weather patterns are making the people do the same. It is scary to think that most if not all of these are drive by shootings on what appears to be random people. For Easter weekend, my fiance and I are going to a Cubs game in up there and this makes me scared to be on the streets of the city! It truly is awful how ignorant people can be when it comes to committing meaningless crimes such as these!

  7. Solution: move to a colder climate. Seriously though, it is awful that people may become afraid to go outside when the weather is nice. Like Christina mentioned (above) it IS awful how ignorant people can be. People must become selfish and crazed when the weather is warm. I would be interested to see if there has been as many shooting in years past on St. Patrick's Day in Chicago. Maybe it was bad this year because of the unseasonably warm weather, or maybe it was a combination of that and the extensive amount of alcohol consumption.

  8. With us all being criminal justice majors we all know the risk factors that come in to play with the weather beginning to become more pleasant for people to come out and "play". Who would want to be outside in cold snowy weather anyways, this is why we see an increase in crime in summer months. And I know a few people have mentioned the drinking aspect of it being St. Patty's Day weekend could have been an aspect of alcohol consumption. In most of these drive by cases there are always incidents where someone was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Majority of these accidents probably rooted from gang violence within the areas of Chicago.
