Self-Defense against Trayvon Martin

In February a young boy named Travyon Martin 17, was walking home from a local 7 Eleven convenience store, around 7 o’clock. It was a rainy day, Travyon had a hoodie on his head to protect himself from getting wet until he returned to his father’s residence. George Zimmerman a 28 year old 200 lb. was a volunteer neighborhood watch captain.
Here is the background on this story. Zimmerman had seen a teenager who looked as if he were on some sort of drugs, walking down the street with a dark hoodie on. Zimmerman called 911 to report the suspicious person, the 911 dispatcher asked him several questions in which he answered respectfully. The dispatcher asked him was he following the suspect, Zimmerman replied yes, dispatcher informed Zimmerman to go back home and police will take it from this point. Zimmerman didn’t follow the instructions of the dispatcher and continued to pursue Martin, Martin called his girlfriend and told her what was going on. He said he was scared because the guy would not stop following him, his girlfriend said to run. Martin stated no I’m just going to walk faster, moments later she heard the man say what are you doing around here, Martin told the guy to leave him alone and stop following him. The phone hung up the girlfriend called back, and no one answered.
People came out of their homes when they heard the confrontation going on and seen the boy get shot, witnesses ran in every direction calling 911 and coming to the aide of the 17 year old boy. Witnesses were questioned and so was Zimmerman with his plea of self-defense. Zimmerman wasn’t arrested and still is free on a Florida statue that gives people basically the right to kill, it’s called Stand your Ground. The statue in some many words says if you’re in fear, you are able to defend yourself accordingly inside and outside of your home. Only problem is Zimmerman was in fact following the boy as he informed the 911 dispatcher also, from the account of several witnesses.
Zimmerman, has recently been charged with domestic violence towards his now ex-fiancé and neighbors say they never could have seen this coming from such a nice young man. Police search the body of 17 year old Trayvon Martin and found that he only had a can of ice tea, Skittles and a few dollars.
The family of Travyon Martin wants justice served they don’t think it was self-defense and they feel the evidence should be heard in a court of law. Sanford, FL police department ruled Martin’s death self-defense, now the city is asking for the chief of police to resign. The case has now also been picked up by State Attorney’s office which means the family will now be able to get their wish for a day in court for Zimmerman. The FBI is also investigating the case and making sure there is no foul play, some news stations are reporting that the Sanford Police Department has been dirty in proceedings of previous cases brought to them.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cr-DzXVKgKA&feature=related

The story is sad I think we shouldn't look at race as many are doing and just see a young boy has been murdered, this child will not being able to go to prom, graduate or even enjoy college life of partying on the weekends as we all get to do. What do you the self-defense or stupidity?

  2. This was a very sad story, I decided to write my blog on this also. I believe that it was a very unfortunate situation. I believe that Zimmerman was acting as a vigilante and took things too far. He should have never approached Martin in the first place. By approaching Trayvon he might have scared him and actively became a target of violence. Trayvon probably thought that he was acting in self defense by hitting Zimmerman who was following him. I think that under the circumstances Zimmerman some way should be held accountable for the death of Trayvon Martin.

  3. Seemed like a terrible tragedy. Its just a shame that Zimmerman decided to take things into his own hands, completely unnecessary. The details might never come to light, concerning what really happened. All we have to go off of are some eye witness interviews. The only problem is our witnesses weren't actually on the scene. One was on the phone with the victim and a few neighbors made 9-1-1 calls while the incident was occurring. Either way I think that Zimmerman should be arrested because his actions were clearly unnecessary and it doesn't appear that there was any threat of death towards Zimmerman. I can't help but feel terrible for the victims family.

  4. This is a terrible tragedy, and I feel sorry for the friend and families lost. I think that Zimmerman should be charged with murder, he had no right to follow they boy when ordered to return home. And he has no right to stop the boy and make an arrest after calling 911. He should be locked up for murder. Just think Zimmerman said it was self defense, well if he did what the dispatcher told him he would not be in any harm. This case reminds me of the Tennessee vs. Gardner case.
