Trayvon Martin: more than meets the eye?

The case of 17 year old high school student Trayvon Martin has taken the nations and even the international media by storm. According to reports George Zimmerman, a 28 year old Neighborhood Watch Captain, came into contact with Martin after alleged suspicious activity. This case tragically escalated into a fatal altercation that left George Zimmerman standing over the lifeless body of the teenager.

When police reached the scene Zimmerman stated he shot Martin out of self-defense, and to date has faced no criminal charges. There is an ongoing investigation at this point, and a federal investigation has followed due to public demand. The U.S. Justice Department as well as The States Attorneys office are reviewing evidence of the February 26th incident.

What really happened? Our nation has been in an uproar demanding justice in the name of Trayvon Martin. In reality, is there more than what meets the eye? The Chicago Tribune on March 26, 2012 released an article which reveals a much darker side to the story. Martin was allegedly the aggressor according to police. Zimmerman spotted Martin on his way to a grocery store and called the police at this time, stating Trayvon was acting suspiciously. He proceeded to follow Martin but lost sight of him and was returning to his vehicle. The Tribune reports on account of The Orlando Sentinel, that at the moment of returning to his vehicle Zimmerman was confronted by Martin where it is reported that the youth, in a confrontational tone, asked Zimmerman if he “had a problem?” The reports go on to say that Zimmerman replied “No” and Martin replied back, “Well you do now!” before striking Zimmerman with a powerful punch to the face.

As these reports reveal, a significant struggle ensued. Zimmerman was found at the scene bloodied with his face significantly battered. Eye witnesses have gone on record stating they heard Zimmerman cry for help before hearing a gunshot, a gunshot which proved deadly.

These latest reports bring light to an incident which many people may not like to acknowledge. Is the bigoted villain we have all been conditioned to despise, truly just an American citizen who acted in self-defense? I understand that this cross-examination may not be the most popular stand point, however, it is our duty as civilized people to consider all facts in this case. Especially considering our own bill of rights encourages us to be free people who can defend themselves, even to bear arms in the 2nd amendment of our Bill of Rights.  This blog entry is based off of police reports and reflective pieces by journalist, what are your views on this case? Sound off below.

  1. Honestly I do not know what to think of this whole situation. One thing I can say for sure is that a 17 year old is dead and there are still plenty of questions left to answer. It is a shame what the media is doing, to both of the men saying one thing at first and changing their statements. Even though new evidence has come to light making Trayvon out to be some sort of manic and a thug it still does not justify the fact that he was killed in a fist fight by a handgun. Now if what the eyewitness is saying is true and that Trayvon went for the gun first then there is a possibility that Zimmerman's story is true. I really do not like how the media is handling this situation and I really do not like how the police are handling the situation either. This is a media firestorm right now and both sides are wanting some form of justice. I really do not want to take either side at this point and time, I would like to say that I am reserving judgement until more facts come out. This is really a messed up situation and I do feel sorry for the families loss of their son Trayvon, no one should have to go through this. But, we will have to see how this is going to turn out and keep an open mind about the whole situation.

  2. I normally keep an open mind about things, but this would have never happen if Zimmerman would've stopped following Martin and let the police investigate. There cannot be any proof of Zimmerman being bloody,no pictures and i believe this because he left the scene of the crime with just given police an account of what happened. Nothing from Zimmerman was taken at the time of the crime not even a drug test, which should've occurred while he was a the police station. Now Zimmerman has had run-ins with the law previously and the allegations include domestic violence against ex fiance restraining order from ex fiance and a police assault. All of these charges were never pressed because his father is a lawyer (dont quote me, its someone in his family).
Bottom line Zimmerman should have never killed that young boy and if that 911 call was him screaming help why did they stop immediately after gunshots were fired?
